Sky Lanterns History
An ancient Chinese tradition, sky lanterns were invented sometime during the "Three Kingdom Period" (around 220 AD) and first used for military communications. Also called "Kung Ming Lanterns" after the man who invented them but the name may actually reference the shape of the hat that Kung Ming wore. The people of Pigshi used the lanterns as a way to let family members know when they had arrived home safely or when it was unsafe to travel.
The design of the lantern hasn't changed much over the centuries. Made from oiled rice paper, a bamboo frame and a small waxy combustible material as a fuel cell. When the fuel cell is lighted, the air is heated within the rice paper. Hot air rises, thus the result is the lantern rises and drifts with the air currents lighting up the sky. Today, the paper is flame retardant and the lantern itself is biodegradable. After lift off, the lantern flies for about 15 minutes.
Pinshi, in Taipai Country, Taiwan holds an annual Lantern Festival where hundreds of lanterns are lighted and released simultaneously. Thailand also has a variation of a similar festival known as "Khoom Loy."
Available in a variety of colors, sky lanterns are a wonderful way to celebrate anniversaries, birthdays, new year's day, weddings or any special event. They add a unique touch to any celebration.
